Participation in Virtual Power Plant
for Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC)
The project
EAC (Elctricity Authority of Cyprus) has decided to utilize existing generating sets already installed in various consumers’
premises for the purpose of gaining additional generating capacity in the form of cold-reserve. The system, hereby called Virtual
Power Plant (VPP), is expected to be utilized in the following situations:
(a) As cold reserve during unexpected
generation outages in order to assist in system frequency recovery and/or stability.
(b) During the hours of peak energy
demand in order to address the problem of increased consumption especially during the hot summer months.
(c) As a
uniform Power Generating Plant that will be committed along with the rest of the available generation according to Transmission System
Operators unit commitment policy in a pre-programmed schedule.
Project Objectives
The system has the following general objectives:
- To remotely control, start and shut-down generating sets already installed throughout the island in consumers premises.
- To monitor
vital safety and generation parameters of each generating set
- To provide centralised management of the generators allowing the formation
of a Virtual Power Plant
- To enable bi-directional communication and control between the national Energy Control Centre and each of
the generation sites.
- The availability of consumption/generation to/from the participating consumers
- Real time situation awareness
- Load management for the reduction of Power over Generation and real time demand management and time of use tariff utilisation.
Our participation
Our
company is now one of the EAC preferred installers.
Our participation in the project is that we have undertaken the implementation
of the system that will put in parallel the genets with the EAC grid.
The implementation
The implementation is done using as the heart
of the system the T-GC500plus (Multiple Parallel gen-set controller)

As we delivered a lot of gensets since now, we have faced some tricky problems, mainly because of the variety of the gensets peripherals
we had to control.
Although we found in front of us, almost all the AVRs and speed controllers that exists in the global market, we manage to solved all those problems effectively and quickly because of two major factors
